Football in Kenya

Football (known as soccer in the United States) is the most popular sport in Kenya, and is a favorite of our Nairobi Kids. Although the Kenyan national team failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup, the entire nation is watching the tournament with rapt attention. Here are a few interesting facts about football in Kenya: 1. The Kenyan national team is known as the Harambee Stars. Unfortunately, the team has never qualified for a World Cup tournament. 2. In addition to local teams, many Kenyans have a strong allegiance to British teams such as the Manchester United. 3. Kenya has several regional football teams. In addition, some large Kenyan companies field their own football teams. 4. Major football matchups are often played at the Moi International Sports Center on the outskirts of Nairobi to a crowd of up to 60,000 Kenyans. Tickets range in price from approximately $4-$8. 5. It is said that the streets of Kenya are deserted during the World Cup as Kenyans crowd in front of any available television to watch the matches. If you have taken an interest in this year’s World Cup, be sure to share your enthusiasm with your sponsored child!
